The project “Cross-border Environmental Initiative” implementing by FORS Montenegro was presented at press conference in Nikšić, on February 17, 2021. The implementation of the project began on December 1, 2020, with the aim strengthen the capacity of institutions dealing with environmental protection and informing the population about the importance of improving the solid waste management system and harmonization with European Union standards in this area. The project is implemented in partnership with the City of Trebinje and the Utility Company from Nikšić.
On this occasion, Miodrag Muratović, Director of the Utility Company, Nataša Tučić, Head of the Service for Local Economic Development, Investments and Energy Efficiency of the City of Trebinje and Veselin Šturanović, Executive Director of FORS Montenegro, addressed the media, expressing satisfaction with the possibility of project implementation. They stated that this is an opportunity to further strengthen the capacity and improve the knowledge and skills of employees in the solid waste management system.
The project is funded by the European Union through the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the IPA Cross-border Cooperation Program Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2014-2020. The total value of the project is 584,681 EUR, of which the European Union’s contribution is almost 317,000 EUR. The value of the project for Montenegro is 406,861 EUR, of which the European Union finances about 220,400 EUR. Co-financing in the amount of 183,100 EUR was provided by FORS Montenegro through a public tender of the Ministry of Public Administration, Digital Society and Media. The contribution of the Utility Company is 3,300 EUR.
This two-and-a-half-year project is implemented in Nikšić and Trebinje, and the main activities include organization of cross-border trainings for employees of environmental institutions, a campaign to raise environmental awareness of citizens, publications related to these topics, a cross-border conference, research on solid waste structure in targeted area and environmental habits of the population, providing recommendations for improving the solid waste management system, procurement of equipment and vehicles for utilities and institutions, etc.
